New York State Motorist With a Traffic Ticket in Another State
Written By: Benjamin Goldman, Esq.
New York State drivers have one advantage over out of state drivers. Unlike most other states, New York will not put out-of-state traffic convictions on your driving record. This means if you get a speeding ticket in New Jersey, the violation will not appear on your New York driving record. More importantly, the out-of-state violation will not impact your New York insurance rates. There are some exceptions, including specifically for commercial drivers.
However, this does not mean you can ignore your out-of-state ticket. This is a major mistake. If you do not answer your ticket it will be reported to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles who will order the suspension of your New York license. This may take several years. The suspension appears on your record as PNG SUBMSN TO CRT-OS. If this happens to you, then you should reach out to a traffic ticket attorney in the state that you got the ticket. Your out-of-state lawyer should be able to go to court instead of you and clear up your case.
