There are two courts in Amity. One is designated for the town, and the other, the Village of Belmont. The village court handles all criminal and civil matters that occur in the village. The remaining town area falls under the town court’s jurisdiction. Both courts adjudicate traffic violations. The New York State Police and the Allegany County Sheriff’s Department patrol Amity and write tickets answerable to the town court.

Speeding is a common charge in Amity. This occurs often on New York State Route 19 (NYS-19). NYS-19 runs diagonally through town heading north-west and south-east. It acts as the town’s arterial road as it passes through the Hamlet of Belvidere and the Village of Belmont.

A portion of the Southern Tier Expressway (I-86) falls under Amity’s jurisdiction. This is because the expressway cuts through the northwest corner of town. Motorists are often cited for speeding here as well. The authorities are known to set up a speed trap right off exit 30. Access to the interstate is provided by NYS-19. Entering the town from the east is New York State Route 244. It passes the Hamlet of Withey as it runs west towards Belmont, where it then terminates.
