I’m an Alabama Licensed Driver and I Received a Traffic Ticket in New York

This article is about Alabama licensed drivers that received a traffic ticket in New York State. Not to be confused with traffic tickets in the Alabama Town Court.

Points Treatment in Alabama

Alabama Code Article 4. Sect. 32-6-31 states:

“…licensing authority in the home state shall give such effect to the conduct as if provided by the laws of the home state.”

This means that Alabama will treat an out of state driving conviction as if it was committed there. Alabama will assess points on the driving record based on the equivalent offense. A list of the points added by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency can be found at https://www.alea.gov/dps/driver-license/driver-license-point-system. If you receive too many points or have a CDL license you run the risk of Alabama suspending your driver’s license.

Other Consequences

With the out=of-state violation appearing on your record, it will be viewed by your car insurance carrier. For the most part, you can expect your car insurance rates to increase for several years after the violation appears on your driving record. New York State also carries relatively high fines for traffic violations. Most violations carry fines of a few hundred dollars plus a mandatory $93 surcharge. Anything above 6 points will also carry a minimum $300 Driver Responsibility Assessment Fee. Besides consequences to your Alabama license, with too many points in New York, you are also facing suspension of your New York driving privileges.
