The town consists of several hamlets and one village named after the town, Bolivar.
Bolivar is known as the “heart of the Allegany Oil Field'' due to its prosperous oil industry in the 1800’s. According to legend, during the oil boom , Bolivar was the wealthiest town, per capita, in the United States. By the early 1900’s the oil fields in the area were suppressed in other western states. This began a steady economic decline, and the entire area has struggled since then to recover.
