Chili is the name of a town in Monroe County, New York. The name of the town is locally pronounced as CHAI-lai. The origin of the name is unclear, though it is definitely not named after the dish. According to some versions, Chili is named after the Chiliasts religion, whose followers were early settlers of the town. However, the generally accepted explanation is that the town is named after the county of Chile that was fighting for independence around the same time that the town was formed.
