Essex is a county in upstate New York. It is in the northeast part of the state and is considered part of the North Country region. The State of Vermont forms the eastern border (across Lake Champlain), To the north is Clinton County and to the west is Franklin County. To the south are the counties of Warren and Washington. Essex County is one of the largest counties by size, making up 1,916 square miles., the county had a population of around 36,500. Its most notable municipality is the Village of Lake Placid. It was home to the 1980 Winter Olympics and is a recreational area during the summer and winter.
