Genesee is a small and rural town in Allegany County, New York. It is considered part of the Southern Tier region. The southern town line is the Pennsylvania border. The two states are separated by the Oswayo Creek. The closest large city is Buffalo, approximately ninety miles north., the town’s estimated population was 1,600. The town was first settled in 1823 and established as a township in 1830. Genesee’s early economy was based on lumber and oil. The town contains two hamlets: Little Genesee and Ceres.

NYS-305 passes through the north-west corner of town briefly.
The town has a constable that is authorized to issue traffic citations. State troopers and county sheriffs also conduct traffic stops. All alleged traffic violations in town are resolved in the Town of Genesee Justice Court. The court is located in the Town Hall building on Main Street in Little Genesee.
