Hamlin is a town in Monroe County, New York. It is located around twenty five miles northwest of the City of Rochester and sits on Lake Ontario. As of May of 2022, its population was 9,056. Hamlin covers forty-five square miles, making it the second largest town in Monroe County. The town consists of several hamlets and beachside communities. They are named Benedict Beach, Hamlin, Kendall Mills, Morton, North Hamlin, Onteo Beach, Sandy Harbor Beach, Shore Acres, Troutburg and Walker.
The town is named after Hannibal Hamlin, the Vice President during Abraham Lincoln’s first term. Andrew Johnson replaced Hamlin as Vice President for Lincoln’s second term. Hamlin was just a few weeks away from being President, as 42 days into the second term, Lincoln was assassinated. Andrew Johnson then became President.
