Independence is a town in Allegany County, New York. It is part of the rural Southern Tier region. The town rests on the New York – Pennsylvania border. It is around 100 miles southeast of Buffalo and 120 miles west of Binghamtown.
As of March of 2022, the population of Independence was 1,211. Independence encompasses thirty-four square miles. The township was formed in 1821. The hamlets of Independence, Whitesville and Spring Mills make up the town. Whitesville was the town’s first settlement.

County Route 22 enters town from the north and heads south until it meets with NYS-248, where it then terminates. NYS-248A runs diagonally through the south-west portion of town. The remaining town area is served by smaller local roads.
