Smithfield is a town in Madison County, New York. It is located around thirty miles east of Syracuse and is considered part of the Central New York region., the town was home to approximately 1,000 residents. The town makes up twenty-four and a half square miles, most of it farmland.

Smithfield was named after Peter Smith, one of the town’s original landowners. The town’s main population area is the Hamlet of Peterboro. This was also named after Peter Smith. Peter was very wealthy and was inherited by Gerrit, his son. Gerrit Smith (1977-1874) was one of the richest people in the US and the richest in New York State. He dedicated his career to various causes, most notably the Abolitionist Movement, the Temperance Movement, and Woman’s Suffrage. He lived in Peterboro and turned the hamlet into a center for the Abolitionist Movement. The hamlet housed many fugitives and was the location of many important movement meetings. Today the hamlet is the location of several historic sites, mostly relating to the Abolitionist Movement.

The roads in town all merge in the main hamlet of Peterboro. From the west comes County Route 25 (Oxbow Road) and County Route 28 (Cody Road). County Route 101 (Swamp Road) approaches from the south. From the east comes County Route 30 (Williams Road) and County Route 32 (Peterboro Road). In the southeast corner of town, County Route 47 (Fearon Road) runs southeast after branching off from CR-101.
