Traffic Tickets in Tompkins County

The roads in Tompkins County are arranged like spokes on a wheel with the City of Ithaca being the center. New York State Route 96 (NYS-96) goes northwest out of Ithaca. Same for NYS-89, which runs along the shore of Cayuga Lake. New York State Route 34 (NYS-34), for the most part, runs north-south through the center of the county. New York State Route 79 (NYS-79) runs west and southeast out of Ithaca. New York State Route 13 (NYS-13) runs southwest and east out of the city.

For the most part, these state routes have a 55-mph speed limit. However, the speed limit is reduced as the road enters more urban areas, especially as they come close to Ithaca. These reduced speed limits often turn into speed traps for motorists, especially those that are not local to the area. County roads can be patrolled by state police and sheriff deputies. Where applicable they can also be patrolled by town or city police officers. Most traffic stops are for speeding, but many other types of infractions are charged. Some examples are cell phone violations, Expired Inspection, unsafe passing, and Unlicensed Operator.
