Cohocton, New York

Not to be confused with the Town of Cochecton, New York

Cohocton is the name of a town and village in Steuben County, New York. The village is within the town. As of July of 2022, the estimated total population is 2,442. The area is known as the Southern Tier region and is generally rural and hilly. The town includes the hamlets of Kirkwood, North Cohocton, and Atlanta. The latter was originally called Bloods but renamed to the more pleasant sounding “Atlanta”. The main population area is in the village. The town court and other town offices are located in Atlanta.

Traffic Tickets in Cohocton

There are two justice courts in Cohocton. One is designated for the town and the other is for the village. The Cohocton Town Court handles tickets issued in the town but outside the village. The Cohocton Village Court does the opposite, only dealing with traffic matters that originate inside the village. Both courts share the same physical location, but each has separate judges.

The Cohocton Town Court is by far the busier of the town court. This is because the town has jurisdiction over a portion of the I-390 (Genesee Expressway). A large volume of traffic citations originate on this highway. New York State Police patrol the area and are often conducting traffic stops, mostly for drivers exceeding the 65-mph speed limit. The town court also adjudicated traffic tickets issued on town roads outside of the village.

The Cohocton Village Court has jurisdiction over traffic violations alleged to have occurred on village roads. The village speed limit is 30 miles per hour. New York State Route 371 (NYS-371) enters the village from the north-east. New York State Route 415 enters from the south-east. They meet at Maple Avenue, which runs east and west through the village. Maple Avenue is the village's primary road. Entering Cohocton Village from the west is County Route 121 (Loon Lake Road). This road provides access to the passing interstate, I-390 (Genesee Expressway) via on-ramps. This occurs just outside the village boundary. Traffic stops on the interstate are conducted by New York State Police (Troop E). On local roads you can be pulled by county sheriffs or officers of the Cohocton Police Department.

It is often a bad idea to plead guilty to tickets. Fines can be very high and violations on your driving record can cause substantial increases in insurance premiums. You can fight your ticket even if you are not from the area and even if you do not have a defense.
