Forestburgh, New York
Forestburgh is a town in Sullivan County, New York. It is located in the Catskills Mountains, just south of the Village of Monticello. The town is mostly rural., the town had an estimated population of 800. Forestburgh’s early economy was primarily tanning, quarrying and lumbering. It grew exponentially during the 1870’s with the extension of the Monticello and Port Jervis Railroad. The railroad grew mostly obsolete with the introduction of the automobile to the middle-class in the early 1900’s. Since then, Forestburgh has remained a small residential town. The town is made up of several small hamlets. They are Fowlerville, Hartwood, Hartwood Club, Merriwold Park, St. Josephs and Squirrels Corner.

It brings motorists between the Town of Thompson and Route 17 in the north to the City of Port Jervis and I-86 in the south. The speed limit is 55 mph. However, motorists tend to exceed the speed limit as the road is mostly straight and there is little traffic. Forestburgh does not have a police department. They received police services from New York State Police and Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office. State troopers and deputy sheriffs are authorized to conduct traffic stops and issue citations.
