Hartwick is a rural and hilly town in Otsego County, New York., the town had an estimated population of 2,000 spread over forty square miles. The town was first settled in 1761 and named after John Christopher Hartwick, a Lutheran minister that purchased the land used for the town. When he died, his fortune was used to establish a seminary in his name. The Hartwick Seminary then moved to neighboring Oneonta and became the Hartwick College, now a private liberal arts college.
