Kinderhook is the name of a village in Columbia County, New York. It is located on the eastern side of the Hudson River, approximately twenty-five miles southeast of Albany. The area is known as the Hudson Valley region and the Capital District region. The village is within the Town of Kinderhook. It is a small village, encompassing 2.1 square miles., the estimated village population was 1,200.

There are two main roads in the village of Kinderhook. Running southwest to northeast is US-9. It enters the village in its southwest corner via the Town of Stuyvesant. As Route 9 enters the village, it is named Broad Street. As Route 9 crosses Route 21, it is renamed Chatham Street. US-9 exits the village in the northwest corner in the direction of Chatham. The other main village road is County Route 21, running southeast to northwest. CR-21 enters the village in the southeast corner via Ghent and is named Hudson Street. When Route 21 crosses US-9 it is renamed Albany Avenue. CR-21 exits the village in the northwest corner in the direction of Schodack.
Most traffic stops in the village are conducted on these main roads. There are two law enforcement agencies that provide police services in the village, New York State Police and Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. Both can issue traffic citations for violations on village roads. All traffic related charges originating from village roads are adjudicated in the Kinderhook Village Court. This should not be confused with the Kinderhook Town Court. The village court has jurisdiction over matters from within the village only. The town court has jurisdiction over the rest of the town, including the village of Vitalie.
