Nelson is a town in Madison County, New York. It is part of the Central New York region and is approximately twenty-five miles southeast of Syracuse. Nelson ‘s total area is forty-four square miles of mostly farmland. Most town residents live in the hamlets of Erieville and Nelson., Nelson’s population was approximately 1,825. The town was named after Horatio Nelson, a British naval commander, widely regarded as one of the greatest in history.

The town’s main road is US Route 20 (US-20). It runs across the northern part of town heading east and west. Taking US-20 westbound will bring you to the city of Cazenovia. Heading east on it will bring you to the village of Morrisville. Intersecting US-20 in the principal hamlet of Nelson are County Route 23 (Nelson Road) and County Route 67 (Erieville Road). CR-23 enters from the north and terminates as it meets US-20. That road then becomes CR-67, which runs north and south through the rest of town. CR-67 intersects another road just east of Erieville. That road is County Route 52 (Eatonbrook Road). It is the main east and west bound road in the south part of town. A high volume of traffic tickets are issued on NYS-20. Specifically, as it enters the Hamlet of Nelson. Prior to entering the hamlet, from both sides, the US-20 is two lanes in each direction with a 55 mph speed limit. Once the road enters the hamlet, the lanes are reduced, and the speed limit is lowered. Motorists, especially from out of the area, do not often adjust properly to the reduced speed limit.
