Ontario is a town in Wayne County, New York. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, approximately twenty miles northeast of downtown Rochester., its population was approximately 10,200. There are several hamlets in Ontario. They are Bear Creek, Furnaceville, Lakeside, Ontario, Ontario Center, Ontario-on-the-Lake, and Union Hill. In the early 19th century, Ontario’s economy was mostly based on mining and smithing iron ore found in the area. Initially the ore was moved by horse and wagon and the roads along this route gradually turned red from the iron ore. According to legend, you were able to identify a person from Ontario because of the red on their shoes and wagon wheels.

Ontario’s main road, New York State Route 104 (NYS-104), runs east and west in the southern portion of town. It is two lanes in each direction, divided by a median. The NYS-104 passes through several populated hamlets like Ontario, Ontario Center, Fruitland, and Union Hill. Taking NYS-104 west brings you to the town of Webster, where the north end of the Wayne County Expressway begins. Taking it east brings you to Williamson. Running north and south from Ontario Center is New York State Route 350 (Ontario Center Road). It intersects with NYS-104 as it passes through the hamlet. Heading north on NYS-350 brings you closer to Lake Ontario and the lakeside hamlets of Bear Creek, Lakeside, and Ontario-on-the-lake. Running parallel to the lake’s coast is the east-west bound County Route 101 (Lake Road).
Most traffic tickets in Ontario originate on the NYS-104. The speed limit does not exceed 55 mph. Most traffic stops are for speeding, but other citations for other violations are issued as well. Traffic patrol is conducted by New York State Police or Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. The Ontario Justice Court (Ontario Town Court) adjudicates all tickets issued in town.
