Rome is a city in Oneida County, New York. It is part of the Central New York region and is located near the southern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. Rome is around forty miles northeast of Syracuse and around twenty miles northwest of Utica.
Rome’s initial settlement in the 18th century was due to the confluence of the Mohawk River and the Wood Creek river. It allowed water travel between the eastern seaboard and points westward, including the Great Lakes. In the 19th century the Erie Canal was built though Rome further enhancing the city’s growth. The peak of the city’s population was in the 1960’s when it had more than fifty thousand residents.
