Skaneateles (pronounced “skinny-atlus”) is a town in Onondaga County, New York. It is around twenty miles southwest of Syracuse. The area is considered part of the Finger Lakes region. The town surrounds the top half of Skaneateles Lake. The town is named after the lake, which is an Iroquois word for "long lake." Skaneateles Lake is one of the eleven Finger Lakes. The town also encompasses a Village of Skaneateles. The village is more affluent and sits on the northern shore of the lake. There are also the hamlets of Jones Beach, Long Bridge, Mandana, Mottville, Shepard Settlement, and Skaneateles Falls.
