Somers is a town located in Westchester County, New York. It is located approximately fifty miles north of Manhattan. The town encompasses many residential communities., Somers’ population was estimated at 22,000.
Somers is known as the origin of the “American Circus”. A man named Hachaliah Bailey bought an African elephant “Old Bet" with the intention to use it for farm work. The elephant attracted curious onlookers which led Bailey to purchase more exotic animals to show off, for a price. After the elephant died in 1827, Bailey built the Elephant Hotel in her honor. The hotel was meant to serve as a memorial to the elephant. According to legend, Old Bet is buried in the front yard. In 2006, the hotel became a National Historic Landmark. Today it serves as the town hall and is the location of the Somers Town Court.

The northern town area is served primarily by US Route 202. It is an east-west bound highway that spans the entire length of town, from the western hamlet of Amawalk, to the outskirts of North Salem. Several state routes intersect with US-202, such as New York State Route 118 (Tomahawk Street). NYS-118 runs north-south and intersects with US-202 in Granite Springs. It runs parallel to the Amawalk Reservoir as it heads south to Amawalk. The largest road that serves the eastern part of town is New York State Route 100 (Somerstown Road).
