Traffic Tickets in Canisteo, New York

There are two courts in Canisteo. One is for the town and the other is for the village. The town court has jurisdiction over traffic matters that occur anywhere inside the town, but outside the village. The village court does the opposite, handling matters that occur only inside the village and not in the town. Which court you must answer to depends on where you received your ticket. If you received a ticket inside the village, you must respond to the village court. Any ticket issued outside the village will be adjudicated by the town court. The village court is busier than the town court.

The village employs a small police force that protects and serves residents inside the boundaries of the village. There is no town police force. Instead, the roads are covered by the New York State Police and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.

The speed limit in Canisteo fluctuates between 55 and 40 miles per hour. The lower speed limit occurs inside the village boundaries. Speeding is a typical charge issued in Canisteo.
