In 1790, the area was first settled and named the new town after William Floyd, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The town’s initial settlement area is locally known as “The Punch Bowl”, supposedly due to the graphical shape of the area. In the early 18th century, Floyd was one of the most well-to-do towns in Oneida County. It was home to scholars and anti-slavery activists. It now serves mostly as a “bedroom” community for people that work in the cities of Rome and Utica.
