Traffic Tickets in Richfield and Richfield Springs, New York

Richfield has two separate justice courts. One is dedicated to the village of Richfield Springs and the other is for the rest of town. When it comes to traffic violations, the Richfield Springs Village Court only deals with tickets that originate inside the village boundaries. The Richfield Town Court does the opposite, only adjudicating tickets that originate outside the village. The New York State Police and the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department patrol the town and village roads.

The village has its own police department that also issues citations for violations on village roads. The village speed limit is 30 miles per hour. Outside the village, the speed limit fluctuates between 40 and 55 miles per hour. This difference in speed catches motorists off guard as they approach the village boundaries. Unable to reduce their speed in a timely manner, they are often stopped by the authorities for speeding.

Most traffic stops occur on US-Route 20 (US-20), the town’s main road. It runs east-west and also acts as the village’s arterial road. New York State Route 28 (NYS-28) is another busy road that often sees traffic stops. It runs north and south along the Canadaraga Lake and enters the village from the south.
