Sidney is a village in Delaware County, New York. It is located approximately forty miles northeast of the City of Binghamton. The village is within the Town of Sidney. It serves as the main population area of the town and is the location of most town businesses. The Sidney Historic District is located in the village. Traffic stops in the village can be conducted by officers of the Sidney Police Department, troopers of the New York State Police, and deputies of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office. Most traffic stops occur on New York State Route 8. The NYS-8 runs north-south through the village. It brings motorists between the I-88 entrance/exit ramp and Chenango County. Route 8 is two lanes in each direction with a 55-mph speed limit. Motorists clocked in the 70-mph range are usually pulled over and cited. Another busy road is County Route 39 (River Street). It brings motorists between the village and the neighboring western town of Bainbridge.
There are two courts in the village of Sidney, the Sidney Village Court and the Sidney Town Court. They are two separate courts that are independent of each other. The village court has jurisdiction over matters from within the village. The town court has jurisdiction over matters from the rest of the town outside of the village. The town court is far busier because it handles traffic tickets from the I-88 highway. The village court is located in the back of Sidney Civic Center building on Liberty Street.
