Veteran is the name of a town in Chemung County, New York. It is considered part of New York’s Southern Tier region. The town is approximately fifteen miles north of the City of Elmira., the population was approximately 3,169. Veteran was formed in 1823 and named in honor of Green Bentley, a veteran of the American Revolution and the French & Indian War. There are several small communities that make up Veteran. They are the hamlets known as Midway, Pine Valley, Rush Run and Sullivanville (formerly Deans Corners). The town also encompasses the village of Millport.

There are two large roads that pass through Veteran. They run north-south along the western and eastern town boundaries. The west road is New York State Route 14 (Watkins Road). The east road is New York State Route 13 (NYS-13). Heading south, both roads lead into the neighboring village, Horseheads. The speed limit on both roads is 55 miles per hour. Motorists clocked in the 70-mph range will typically be stopped and cited. As NYS-14 enters Millport, the speed limit is reduced to 30 mph. Traffic stops are conducted here as well. The middle section of town is served by County Route 5 (Ridge Road), and numerous smaller local roads.

The Town of Veteran does not have its own police department. There is no local police force in Veteran. The roads are under the surveillance of the New York State Police and Chemung County Sheriff’s Department. All traffic tickets they issue are made answerable to the Veteran Town Court The court is located in the village of Millport, at the intersection of Watkins Road (NYS-14) and Johnson Hollow Road.
